The Sunny Island

Nature, culture, traditions: Grado is a unique island

The history of Grado is closely interwoven with those of two illustrious cities: Aquileia – Grado is at the beginning its maritime suburb-, and Venice – for which Grado is a “mother”, having given to it the prestigious title of Patriarchade.

During the V and VI century Grado became a  “fortress”, the castrum gradense, in order to be protected from the barbarian invasions and gave shelter to the bishops of Aquileia who built here marvellous churches, that are still the centre of the religious life: the rests of that period are still to be seen in the architecture of the historic centre.

What to visit in the historic centre:

– Basilica of Sant’Eufemia
– Baptistery and epigraphic museum
– Santa Maria delle Grazie
– Town Hall Square
– The harbour of Grado

The beach, the Spa centre and the Thermal Water Park

Grado is the only seaside resort on the Adria Sea with the beach completely facing the South. The climate is extremely mild and cloudless, so that the island is commonly called the Sunny Island.

The sea in Grado is clean  – since many years it can boast of the Blue Flag, an exclusive eco-label that is a guarantee for the cleanness of its sea. With its shallow waters and relaxing waves it is the ideal sea for children.

The modern Spa centre in Grado offers, beside the sandbathing, other famous treatments: the ozonized bath with heated sea water (to cure osteoarthritis and rheumatism); inhalations, nebulizations and aerosol therapy (to cure diseases of the respiratory tracts); thermal swimming-pool with whirlpool, Finnish sauna and Turkish bath.

The new Thermal Water Park is near the thermal Spa, inside the principal beach of Grado. Here you can find a large sea water swimming-pool, hydromassage and waterfall massage jets to tone up your body, diving boards, water chutes, children amusement park and bar with under water seats to drink your favourite drink remaining in the water.

Grado also boasts a large pedestrian area  that leads from the harbour, real “heart” of Grado,  towards the boulevards (full of shops, bars and ice-cream parlours), the historical centre and a new area next to the historic centre, where there are many typical fish restaurants.

Don’t forget to visit the the diga, the seafront of Grado has been recently renovated and embellished. It is the ideal place for a romantic walk in the evening…
